It is common to think the older an item is the more unstable it is.

In many cases this is true, but when it comes to your photographs this might be false! Great-grandmas wedding portrait if it has been kept in a stable environment might be better off than your parent’s wedding photos!  Due to the dyes used in photos during the middle of the 20th century, they have a tendency to fade quickly, even if stored under ideal conditions!

Digitization, and depending on the amount of damage already done digital enhancement, is a great solution as a back up to these fading photographs. The keyword here is backup! Never does someone want to throw out originals even with back up copies in existence elsewhere. Keep in mind, there are a million copies of the Declaration of Independence out there, but its the original that actually holds value.
